Calculate body mass index
How this tool works
Body mass index is a simple adult screening ratio based on weight relative to height. This calculator performs the metric calculation locally and presents restrained range language because BMI cannot evaluate body composition, health history, or individual risk.
Metric BMI equals weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Height entered in centimetres is first divided by 100 before the square is calculated.
How to use it
- Enter adult body weight in kilograms.
- Enter height in centimetres without footwear.
- Read the calculated BMI and screening-range description.
Worked examples
Metric BMI example
- Input
- 70 kg and 175 cm
- Output
- BMI 22.9
Converting 175 centimetres to 1.75 metres and dividing 70 by 1.75 squared gives approximately 22.9, within the standard adult screening range.
Shorter height example
- Input
- 60 kg and 160 cm
- Output
- BMI 23.4
The height becomes 1.60 metres. Dividing 60 kilograms by 1.60 squared produces about 23.4 after rounding to one decimal place.
Limitations
- BMI is a screening measure and is not a medical diagnosis.
- Adult BMI ranges are not appropriate for children, pregnancy, or every body composition.
