Fuel Cost Calculator
Estimate fuel volume and journey cost from travel distance, vehicle efficiency in kilometres per litre, and local fuel price.
Estimate journey fuel cost
How this tool works
This calculator connects distance, measured fuel efficiency, and price without assuming a currency. It reports required litres separately from cost so users can replace either vehicle performance or local price and understand why the estimate changes.
Fuel required equals journey distance divided by kilometres per litre. Estimated cost equals required litres multiplied by the entered price per litre.
How to use it
- Enter the total journey distance in kilometres.
- Enter realistic vehicle efficiency in kilometres per litre and the current price per litre.
- Read the estimated litres and cost in the same currency used for price.
Worked examples
Intercity journey
- Input
- 300 km, 12 km/L, price 280 per litre
- Output
- 25 litres and cost 7,000
Dividing 300 kilometres by 12 kilometres per litre gives 25 litres. Multiplying 25 by the entered price produces the journey estimate.
Efficient short trip
- Input
- 120 km, 15 km/L, price 270 per litre
- Output
- 8 litres and cost 2,160
The efficiency indicates one litre covers 15 kilometres, so 120 kilometres needs eight litres before the selected unit price is applied.
Limitations
- Traffic, terrain, idling, load, weather, and driving style can change actual efficiency.
- The calculator does not include tolls, maintenance, or return distance unless entered.
