How this tool works
Average speed summarizes total distance divided by total elapsed time. It can differ from instantaneous speed because stops and changes are combined into one overall rate. The calculator stays unit-neutral so users can work in kilometres, miles, metres, hours, or seconds.
Average speed v equals total distance d divided by elapsed time t. The resulting unit is the entered distance unit per entered time unit.
How to use it
- Enter the total distance travelled.
- Enter positive elapsed time in the intended time unit.

Worked examples
Road journey
- Input
- 150 km in 2.5 hours
- Output
- 60 km/h average
Dividing 150 kilometres by two and a half hours gives an average of 60 kilometres for each elapsed hour.
Walking example
- Input
- 6 miles in 2 hours
- Output
- 3 miles per hour
The same distance-over-time relationship applies to any consistent units, producing three miles for each hour in this example.
Limitations
- Average speed does not show stops, acceleration, direction, or peak speed.
- The calculator does not automatically convert between distance or time units.
